Swiss Sensation Audrey Werro is coming to Brussels

Athletics fans can look forward to Audrey Werro’s appearance at the Allianz Memorial Van Damme. The 22-year-old Swiss athlete has been the sensation of the season in the 800 metres. Week after week, Werro has been breaking records in the 800 metres. She is the fastest 800-metre runner since 1983.

Werro kicked off her season at the end of May with a victory and a meeting record at the Diamond League meeting in Rabat. A week later, at the Diamond League meeting in Stockholm, she stormed to victory in 1:53.98, smashing her personal best and clocking the third-fastest time ever.

A brief detour to the 600 metres proved just as successful: on home soil, in Biel, she set a new European record with a time of 1:22.85.

Last Sunday, at the Diamond League meeting in Paris, Werro caused another sensation in the 800m with a stunning time of 1:53.80: a new personal best, meeting record and Diamond League record. She is now just 52 hundredths of a second away from Jarmila Kratochvílova’s legendary world record from 1983 (1:53.28), the oldest world record in athletics.

Alongside Duplantis, Mahuchikh & Gressier

Werro joins a number of previously announced world stars coming to the Memorial. First and foremost, Mondo Duplantis. He, too, once again demonstrated his class in Paris. The Swede won the pole vault with a jump of 6m13, thereby dotting the i’s of his performance following his rare defeat in Stockholm on 7 June.

The participation of Yaroslava Mahuchikh and Jimmy Gressier has also been confirmed for some time. The 24-year-old Ukrainian is the world record holder and reigning Olympic Champion in the high jump and has already won four times at the Memorial. The 29-year-old Frenchman is the World Champion in the 10,000 metres and will attempt to break the world hour record in Brussels on 4 September.

An anniversary edition to look forward to

The Allianz Memorial Van Damme is celebrating its 50th edition this year and is once again the Diamond League final. This means that the Memorial, just as in 2024, will be a two-day spectacle. See you on Friday 4 and Saturday 5 September at the King Baudouin Stadium in Brussels.
