Athletics for a Better World: Memorial Earns Bronze and Sets Sights Even Higher for 2025!

World Athletics has awarded the Allianz Memorial Van Damme the Bronze Label for its efforts in 2024 toward “Athletics for a Better World” (ABW), an initiative through which the global athletics federation aims to use the power of athletics to promote social responsibility and sustainability

The Memorial has embedded sustainability, diversity, and inclusion into its vision and organization, striving for a better world in line with the ABW principles.

This acknowledges growing global environmental challenges, as well as the fact that inequality and a lack of diversity and inclusion pose serious threats to our planet and its people.

Key initiatives include:

  • A procurement charter for suppliers with clear commitments on waste, materials, and local food chains.
  • Carbon reduction mapping with ENGIE, focusing on major emission sources like audience transportation.
  • Electrifying the fleet through a new partnership with Honda.
  • Continued focus on diversity and inclusion for both participants and spectators, including athletes with disabilities, gender pay equity, and initiatives for vulnerable families.

Based on 2024’s insights, the Memorial will further evolve its sustainability strategy in 2025, setting ambitious long-term goals and short-term actions. Through athletics, we aim to build a better world and future for all.
