Genyn opens AG Memorial Van Damme with world record

The 44th AG Memorial got off to a great start on Friday night. At the King Baudouin Stadium in Brussels, Peter Genyn set a new world record in the 100 metres for wheelers.

Two-time Paralympic champion Genyn defeated Roger Habsch in a Belgian duel on the 100 metres for wheelers (class T51). Genyn set a time of 19:71, beating his own world record by 0:04. Habsch finished in 20:62.

“I am super happy,” Genyn smiled. “I am in great shape, I went below the 20-second mark in three of my four 100-metre races this summer. Normally I should have been competing in the 100 metres today at the Tokyo Paralympics. For me this is proof that I would have been there for the gold medal. Roger and I will be good competitors for the next few years, he’s also very strong right now.”

“The organisers did a great job with this event. There’s no audience, but the applause from the speakers makes sure it’s a nice experience. As a wheeler you’re also looking at the ground, you don’t see the empty grandstands.”
