Honouring Ivo Van Damme, 49 Years On

Today marks exactly 49 years since the tragic passing of Ivo Van Damme, one of Belgium’s greatest middle-distance runners and a true sporting legend.

Born in Brussels on 21 February 1954, Ivo started his athletic journey in football before discovering his exceptional talent in athletics. Initially excelling in the 1500m, he quickly found his true distance: the 800m. His dedication, discipline, and determination made him a standout athlete from a young age.

Ivo’s breakthrough came at the 1973 European Junior Championships, where he set a new Belgian record. Despite setbacks — including a battle with mononucleosis in 1974 — he returned stronger than ever. His most remarkable achievements came at the 1976 Montreal Olympics, where he won silver in both the 800m and 1500m, setting a Belgian record, and earning accolades including the Trophy for Sporting Merit, the Golden Spike, and the title of Belgian Sportsman of the Year.

Tragically, Ivo’s life was cut short in a car accident on his way home from a training camp in Southern France. To honour his extraordinary talent and legacy, the first Memorial Van Damme was organised a year later — a tradition that has grown into one of the most prestigious athletics meetings in the world.

This year, the 50th edition of the Memorial Van Damme on 4–5 September 2025 will be a special tribute to Ivo Van Damme, celebrating not only world-class athletics but also the life and legacy of the athlete who inspired generations. His spirit continues to inspire athletes and fans alike, because true legends never fade.
