Russell: “I want to become a legend in this sport”

Masai Russell will compete at the Allianz Memorial Van Damme on Saturday evening as the brand-new world record holder in the Wanda Diamond League 100-metre hurdles final. But she values titles even more than top times. Lots of titles, as many as possible. “I want to become a legend in this sport,” says the 26-year-old American resolutely.

She already has an Olympic title, and on Saturday evening, she could add her first overall victory in the Wanda Diamond League. Russell has won six WDL meetings this season, with times ranging from 12.09 to 12.27. “I’m running really consistent times this season,” Russell beams. “All the pieces of the puzzle are falling into place.”

With that 12.09, clocked in Zurich last week, Russell is the new world record holder. “I’m obviously very happy about it, but I’m not done yet. The job’s not done yet. Sport is all about winning titles, starting this Saturday. To be regarded as a legend in the sport, you have to win trophies. And that’s what I want!”, she says without hesitation and full of ambition.

Winning trophies and breaking records can, of course, go hand in hand. Does Russell think it’s possible to break the 12-second barrier one day? “Of course. When I set my world record in Zurich, there was hardly any wind. With a favourable tailwind, good temperatures and plenty of energy from the stadium, it should be possible. Lots of things seem impossible… until they happen.”

Who knows, it might happen on Saturday night at the King Baudouin Stadium…
