The organisers of the Allianz Memorial Van Damme and Recupel are joining forces to highlight the importance of recycling mobile phones. And there is a good reason for this: 1.6 million mobile phones are currently lying unused in drawers across Belgium. They contain valuable raw materials that can be recovered and put back into circulation. On Friday 4 and Saturday 5 September, visitors can hand in their old mobile phone at the Recupel stand at the King Baudouin Stadium. For every phone handed in, they will receive a drinks voucher. It is a simple way to make a tangible contribution to the environment while enjoying the event to the fullest.
Give your mobile phone a second life
During the Allianz Memorial Van Damme, the action is not limited to the track. On both competition days, visitors can hand in their old or unused mobile phones at the Recupel stand.
According to a Recupel study, mobile phones are among the ten types of devices most commonly left unused in Belgian households. There are various reasons for this: we keep putting off recycling our phone, hold on to it for nostalgic reasons, or simply keep it “just in case”. Yet these devices, whether they are still working or broken, can still serve a useful purpose.
Eric Dewaet, CEO of Recupel: “Through reuse or recycling, a mobile phone that is handed in remains part of the circular economy. The more raw materials we recycle locally, the fewer resources we need to extract abroad. Everyone can help preserve valuable raw materials with a small gesture.”
For every mobile phone handed in, visitors will receive a drinks voucher, which they can exchange for a drink at the drinks stand.
Recycle your mobile phone with peace of mind
Before handing in your device, you can consult the Recupel website for practical tips on how to delete data from a mobile phone.
Once the devices are handed in to Recupel, they are entrusted to specialised partners who securely erase the data before the devices are potentially reused. Devices destined for recycling are shredded during the processing stage, which also permanently destroys any remaining data.
