World Athletics wants to make the sport more attractive by revamping a number of disciplines. The Allianz Memorial Van Damme programme now includes the 3000 metres steeplechase, together with the 4x100m mixed relay, as one of the test events at the request of the world athletics federation. A shorter race at a higher pace makes for a more spectacular event.
The 3000 metres steeplechase at the Allianz Memorial Van Damme features a strong field of participants. Reigning World and Olympic Champion in the 3000m steeplechase, Winfred Yavi, will attempt to break the world record at the King Baudouin Stadium. The Bahraini athlete, who is of Kenyan origin, is currently number one in the longer distance and was only seven hundredths of a second short of wiping out Beatrice Chepkoech’s seven-year-old world record last summer.
In Brussels, she will do everything she can to set a new world record. Yavi has fond memories of her previous visits to Belgium. A month ago, she came close to the world record in the 3000m steeplechase in Heusden-Zolder.
