5000m World Record attempt by Almaz Ayana in Brussels DL

Almaz Ayana might be the athlete to set the 15th World Record at the AG Insurance Memorial Van Damme. The brand new Olympic Champion and World Record holder in the 10000m has announced that she will attempt to run the fastest ever 5000m in Brussels !

Ayana set a fabulous World Record mark of 29:17.45 in her Olympic 10000m. One week later she had to settle for bronze in the 5000m, although she is the reigning World Champion on the distance. In Brussels she will try to wash away that disappointment.
The 24 year old Almaz Ayana from Ethiopia is certainly capable of breaking the 5000m World Record. The World Record is held since 2008 by her compatriot Tirunesh Dibaba with 14:11.15. This year Ayana came close to that record already three times : she ran 14:12.59 in Rome, 14:14.32 in Shangai and 14:16.63 in Rabat. Those are the 2nd, 4th and 6th alltime performances on the distance. In Rio Ayana ran the second 5000m of her winning 10000m in stunning 14:31.04. Expectations are very high that the fourth attempt of Ayana to break the 5000m World Record could be the lucky one.
