The athletes who win their event in Brussels will be crowned as Diamond League Winners. The winner gets his share of the $ 1,6 million prize purse, with $ 50.000 (€ 43.000) going to each winner, along with the Diamond Trophy.
A big sensation came from Shaunae Miller-Uibo (BAH) who won the 200m on a wet track in a National record of 21”88. World Champion Dafne Schippers faded in the final stages and had to settle for 4th place only in 22”36. Schippers can get things right in the 100m in Brussels. Miller-Uibo qualified to compete in the Diamond League Final in the 400m in Brussels.
It dates back from May 2012 that Caterine Ibarguen (COL) didn’t finish in 1st or 2nd place in a Triple Jump competition. The freshly minted World Champion came in third with 14.48m. Olga Rypakova (KAZ) won the event with 14.55m.
Another surprise came from C.J. Ujah from Great Britain who won the 100m dash in 9”97, while World Champion Justin Gatlin only came through in 4th place in 10”04.
In the second half of the 3000m Steeplechase World Record holder Ruth Jebet (BRN) made a phenomenal move that brought her down to a winning time of 8’55”29, the second fastest in history. Beatrice Chepkoech came in second in 8’59”84 which is the 4th all time performance of a female steeplechaser.
Mo Farah’s last track race was a true thriller. Farah took the lead at the bell in the 5000m but he was chased down by Paul Chelimo, Muktar Edris and Yomif Kejelcha. But Farah, eyeballs out and grimacing, held firm and came in victoriously in 13’06”05, hunderdths of a second ahead of the rest of the field, in which Chelimo was disqualified for obstruction. From now on Farah will concentrate on road running and marathon.
Isaac Makwala (BOT) set another top result in winning the 400m in 43”95. Kévin Borlée decently placed 5th in 45”77. This Saturday Kévin Borlée and his brothers Jonathan and Dylan take part at the AG Urban Memorial Van Damme Series on Place St Catherine (Fish Market) in the heart of the city in Brussels. They will also compete in the 400m at the AG Memorial Van Damme (no Diamond League event).
