As is now a popular tradition on the eve before the AG Memorial Van Damme, one of the IAAF Diamond League finals is held in the heart of the Belgian capital. This year the eight best female shot putters of the past season gathered on the historic Grand Place to fight for the diamond trophy.
Helped by pleasant nice summer afternoon weather, the event was well-attended by the locals as they cheered on the eight finalists.
Reigning world champion and Diamond League winner Lijiao Gong had been unbeaten for seven events and didn’t trip up in Brussels either. The Chinese won the competition with a shot put of 19m83, the second-best performance this year. American Raven Saunders (19m64) was second ahead of Germany's Christina Schwanitz (19m50).
On Thursday night 16 Diamond League finales will be contested in Zürich. The remaining 15 events are kept for Friday night’s glamorous season finale: The 42nd edition of the AG Memorial Van Damme in the King Baudouin Stadium of Brussels.
