The National Mile Record in Belgium is held by Almensh Belete since August, 18th 2012, when she ran 4’28”11. At the Allianz Memorial Van Damme Vanderelst can compete in ideal conditions, because the Women’s Mile is part of the 12th leg of the Wanda Diamond League where i twill replacet he 1500m.
Elise Vanderelst : “This is the perfect way to end my season. With this goal in mind, it is much easier to motivate myself after the Olympics. The Mile is a special event and it is a while ago that I competed in it. In front of my home crowd, in a highly competitive field and with good shape of course, I hope that I can break that record.”
Vanderelst already owns the 1500m National Record. On July, 10th she smashed the existing mark on the distance, which was held for 19 years by Veerle Dejaeghere, at the Diamond League meeting in Florence,. Earlier this year Vanderelst also set a new National 1500m indoor record and last weekend she set her third National Record in 2021. At the KBC Night of Athletics she obliterated the 42 year old mark from Anne-Marie Van Nuffel.
