At last year’s event Van Branteghem was still the assistant meeting director, but this year he’s taken over at the helm from Wilfried Meert. “As meeting organiser you’re always hoping for fast times, but as a former athlete I know athletes primarily care about that victory,” says the former 400 metre runner.
"But don’t worry, we’ll see a lot of great races. I’m especially looking forward to several duels after the world championships. I’m thinking about Nijel Amos, who dominated the 800 metres at the Diamond League qualifying meetings, but couldn’t make it happen at the world championships in London. Elaine Thompson is also eager to shine on the 100 metres after her disappointing world championships."
Van Branteghem is also looking forward to the performances of several Belgian stars. “The discus will be very interesting with Philip Milanov wanting to put the world championships behind him, where he didn’t manage to qualify for the finals,” Van Branteghem adds. "Who knows he can do that by winning the Diamond League in front of his home crowd.
“The high jump will also be something to look forward to. Can Maria Lasitskene beat her season’s best of 2m06? Wildcard Nafi Thiam will be a great attraction for both the Belgian and international public.”
Van Branteghem points out one athlete has a chance to pick up two Diamond Trophies on Friday night. "Tianna Bartoletta is one of the long jump favourites along with Brittney Reese and Darya Klishina. As a reserve she will also appear on the 100 metres. The American can do the double at the Memorial!"
