In the Women’s 5000m Agnes Tirop ran to victory. She kept in control when Lilian Rengeruk, Fantu Worku and Gabriella Debues-Stafford launched early attacks. In the end Tirop secured victory in 14:50.82 which is a World Lead. Fantu Worku (14:51.31) and Rengeruk (14:51.34) are the other top 3 finishers. They are the first qualifiers for the Final in Brussels.
The Women’s Discus Throw turned out to be a Cuban festival in which Denia Caballero prevailed. With a 65,10m outing she beat down her compatriot Yaime Perez by only 1cm. Six times Diamond Trophy Winner Sandra Perkovic had to settle for 5th place only.
The 400m Men marked the first appearance of Michael Norman as a pro in the IAAF Diamond League. Norman is the World Leader with phenomenal 43,45. The American delivered in Stockholm with a winning 44,53. USA also took second and third with Rai Benjamin (45,13) and Michael Cherry (46,30). Cherry heads the Road to Brussels, ahead of Strother and Norman.
Aaron Brown won the Men’s 200m in 20.06. Ramil Guliyev from Turkey (20.40) went out fast but couldn’t respond to the strong finish of the Canadian. Guliyev had to withdraw in Shanghai due to illness. Jereem Richards from Trinidad and Tobago came in third in 20.45. Guliyev holds the lead in the Road to Brussels, ahead of Brown and Quinonez who finished 4th in Stockholm.
Kendra Harrinson was a class act in the 100m Hurdles. It looked like a copy of her race in 2016 that she also convincingly took home. The American battled with her compatriot Sharika Nelvis until the 5th hurdle and then left the field behind to finish in 12.52. In the Road to Brussels Harrison now shares the lead with Tobi Amusan from Nigeria who finished 3rd in Sweden.
Ajee Wilson took another win for the USA in the 800m. Wilson produced a strong second lap to cross the line in 2:00.87. Nelly Jepkosgei couldn’t hang on in the final straight and was overtaken by Habitam Alemu who finished in second. Wilson now heads the Road to Brussels.
The High Jump was dominated by Mariya Lasitskene who competes as an Authorized Neutral Athlete. She was the only athlete to cross a bar at 1,92m and secured her 4th victory in the Swedish capital. Yuliya Levchenko and Erika Kinsey, both at 1,90m, came in 2nd and 3rd. In the Road to Brussels Swede Kinsey now shares the lead with Yaroslava Mahuchikh who finished 4th in Stockholm.
The Men’s 1500m was taken by Timothy Cheruiyot in 3:35.79. The Kenyan outsprinted Ayanleh Souleiman (3:37.30) and Jakob Ingebrigtsen (3:37:30) to cross the line victoriously.
In the final field event the local crowd went mad when local favourite Daniel Stahl beat his opponents and qualified for the Final of the Discus Throw in Brussels. He failed to break the Meeting Record in an ultimate attempt but still was loudly cheered by the local crowd with a winning effort of 69,57m.
