The track is getting ready. The athletes will start at the Atomium and run in the direction of the Keysel palaces. It guarantees fantastic and unique images of the most famous Belgian monument. A crew of 15 people is working since Thursday to get the track ready. It is 130m long with 4 lanes and it bridges a height difference of 5,50m. At the finish line special fan zones are installed over the last 50m.
The AG Urban Memorial Van Damme Sprintfestival will start at 12:30 next Sunday with 5 national heats of the 100m women. At 13:30 the first of 7 heats for the 100m men steps in their blocks. That is followed by a program for Special Olympics athletes and from 14:30 until 16:00 the Hurdlers take possession of the track. The highlight of the day will be a 4 x 100m back to back relay – inspired by the swimming relays – in which the Belgian Tornadoes will participate.
THE FUTURE OF ATHLETICS
Jacques Borlée, coach of the Belgian Tornadoes is a big fan of the concept. “This is the future of athletics. At the 2020 Olympic Games a 4 x 400m mixed is fort he first time on the program. We are very pleased that we can get a taste here of this new discipline. An dit is held on a fantastic location in the shadow of an iconic monument.”
We invite all of you to come and join this event. Access to the AG Urban Memorial Van Damme Sprintfestival is free. Children up to the age of 12 can participate in a Kids Athletics event from 12:00 until 16:00 hrs, to take their first steps in athletics, led by experienced athletics coaches.
