New stadium for 'Golden Generation'

It is high time for action now so that our national sports pride have a state of the art stadium at their disposal so that Belgian sports can shine in front their home fans more than ever before. The new stadium will bear the name of “Golden Generation”, which refers to a golden generation of sportsmen and it will become the home base for the Belgian Red Devils, the Memorial Van Damme, for national and international football and athletics competitions as well as for concerts.

The destiny of the new stadium will not change. The new modern sports temple will stand on the same place as where it stands today. The capacity of the new premises will be reduced to 40.000 seats, so that environmental priorities and concerns can be met.

Bob Verbeeck, CEO of Golazo is very positive about these recent developments. “As organisers of the Memorial Van Damme this is a first step in the right direction. It is important that football and athletics join forces and decide to opt for one new stadium. This allows us to secure and to keep alive the memory of Ivo Van Damme and of the actual generation of world class football players here in Brussels. We now want to move forward with the next steps as quickly as possible and to start a dialogue with all the relevant stakeholders. This is the right moment to do it, as we will continue to play an important role in the IAAF Diamond League that will get a brand new and innovative layout starting from 2020.”

Footprints as first stones

After the press conference some athletes of our Golden Generation put their footprints as symbolic first building stones for the transformation of the King Baudouin Stadium into the Golden Generation Arena. Amongst them were Kevin Borlée, Cynthia Bolingo, Youri Tielemans, Eden Hazard, Tessa Wullaert and Jan Vertonghen who definitely want to shine in the new stadium in the years to come.
