This Friday the IAAF Diamond League 2017 took off. Ahead of the meeting Sandi Morris responded to questions from athletics fans from all over the world. When she was asked about the most beautiful moment in her career she kept talking in terms of an apology about the AG Memorial Van Damme, where she broke the magical 5.00m mark to set a lifetime best performance.
“Brussels was the most memorable competition of my life. Even better than the Rio Olympics (where she won silver). The situation was very special. All events were finished and I was the only pole vaulter remaining in the competition. There were more than 40.000 spectators and nobody left the stadium.”
“But I was so focused that I didn’t even realise this was happening. Until I jumped 4.94m and instinctively looked to my right to see if there were athletes passing by when I wanted to cross the track. My coach said : “Sandi, you’re the only athlete left in the stadium.” It was so cool to be on the infield with all eyes set in my direction.”
“The sound, the cheers, I can not describe how it felt. It was so loud and it was only for me ! When I crossed the bar at 5.00m and fell on the landing pad it seemed to me as if there were 5 seconds of silence. But when I watched the video I realised that within a split second the crowd was ecstatic. It was the loudest cheering of all times !”
“I watched this video for a million times over and over again. That moment at the AG Memorial Van Damme in Brussels has made a huge impact on my career. That moment I realised : this is why I am doing all this !”
