In his third attempt the discus landed at 64,94m, just 6cm short of the qualifying mark for the London World Championships (4 to 13 August). But he did improve on his previous seasonal best of 62.95m.
25-year old Milanov who won silver at the 2015 WC and at the 2016 EC holds the national record of 67,26m that he set in Doha on May, 6th 2016. Milanov took his second Diamond Race win, after he took victory in London in 2015.
Vice Olympic Champion Piotr Malachowski from Poland, who is also the reigning World and European Champion finished in second with a 64,36m throw. Daniel Stahl from Sweden came in third with 64,14m. Philip Milanov was the only Belgian athlete to compete in Shangai.
Milanov is now the first Diamond Race leader ahead of the Final in Brussels. The top 8 in each discipline will be invited to compete in the Diamond League Finals in either Zürich or Brussels. Milanov will also be present on Saturday June, 3rd in the AG Urban Memorial in Ostend, Square of the Sea Heroes (Zeeheldenplein).
7 other athletes made a giant step in Shangai on their Road to Brussels : Noah Lyles (200m men), Kipyegon Bett (800m men), Omar McLeod (110m Hurdles men), Elaine Thompson (100m women), Shaunae Miller-Uibo (400m women), Hellen Obiri (5000m women) and Sandra Perkovic (Discus Throw women). In their event Lyles, Thompson, Miller-Uibo and Obiri also set a World Leading performance in their discipline !
