In the 5000m the Ethiopian favourite Yomif Kejelcha stumbled approaching the final straight and grabbed hold of Barega’s short to hold him back. It cost Barega victory as Birhanu Balew took advantage. The Bahreini finished in a World Lead and personal best of 13,01,09. Barega only came in second in 13.02.67 and his compatriot Abadi Hadis was third in 13.03.62. Balew, Barega and Hadis now also lead the Road to Brussels and are qualified for the Diamond League Final on August, 31st at the AG Memorial Van Damme.
7 events were held of which the Final will take place in Brussels. One of them is the Men’s Triple Jump. In the second attempt Pedro Pablo Pichardo from Portugal took the lead with 17,61m, followed by a third and winning attempt of 17,62m by Christian Taylor from the USA. Taylor backed up his winning performance with another 17,60m in the final round. Both athletes have now secured their spot in the Brussels Final.
The Women’s Long Jump was won by German Malaiko Mihambo with 6,90m, equalled by Ivana Spanovic (SRB). The German won with a better second best of 6,70m against 6,67m for the Serbian. Salwa Eid Naser from Bahrein dominated the Women’s 400m (49,78), American Shelby Houlihan took surprise victory in the Women’s 1500m in a new Meeting Record of 3,57.34. Sergey Shubenkov who competes as an Authorised Neutral Athlete (ANA) had a convincing win in yet another sub 13 seconds in the 110m Hurdles (12,95). Danil Lysenko (ANA) was the best High Jumper (2,37m) while Mutaz Essa Barshim remained sidelined by injury. Barshim and Lysenko will be in the great High Jump Final in Brussels at the AG Memorial Van Damme.
In the other events Noah Lyles won the highle rated 200m and equalled his World Lead of 19,69. Qatari Abderrahman Samba was again outstanding in the 400m Hurdles (47,42). Marie-Josée Ta Lou won the 100m in 10,90, Dafne Schippers came in fourth in 11,02.
