Due to a double defect in one of the underground cables, the large floodlights were not able to illuminate the King Baudouin Stadium during the event. Powered by a backup generator, the stadium lights and electrical systems did manage to function. As such the AG Memorial Van Damme went ahead as planned.
Neither the sportive exploits of the athletes nor the television broadcasts were hindered at any point.
