Belgium was impressive at the European Championships and ranked 5th in the Medal Table with 6 medals, 3 of them gold. The Belgian Cheetahs, the women’s 4 x 400m team unfortunately finished in 4th place but they shattered the national record in Berlin. All 4 finalists can be seen at the AG Memorial Van Damme. Cynthia Bolingo in the 200m and Camille Laus in the 400m and Hanne Claes and Justien Grillet in the 400m Hurdles.
Renée Eykens stumbled and fell in the final straight of the 800m heats in Berlin. In Brussels she gets the chance to demonstrate her real capacities and, who knows, take the opportunity to register a sub 2’00”-time.
Eline Berings was very consistent in the 100m Hurdles this season but fell 5 thousands of a second short to qualify for the EC-Final in Berlin. She will try to compete at her best in Brussels. The same goes for youngster Elise Vanderelst who just dropped off the final of the 1500m in Berlin.
Junior Elliott Crestang gets a wildcard for the 800m. High Jumper Bram Ghuys is entered in his event and EC-finalist Arnaud Art is a strong contender in the Pole Vault. Art already set a national record of 5,72m this year.
Last but not least will the Borlée family and “wonder woman” Nafi Thiam also be on the infield. Kévin Borlée (silver) and his brother Jonathan (bronze) were individually successful at the European Championships. Their younger brother Dylan will also compete in the 400m. Nafi Thiam won the European Title and she heads the field in the High Jump in Brussels.
