32 Disciplines and Extra Prize Money For 10 Stars
04 December, 2020

32 Disciplines and Extra Prize Money For 10 Stars

The Wanda Diamond League revealed the calendar last week, and has now also announced the changes to the prize money that will be awarded next year. The disciplines that were cancelled in 2019 will make a return, which means that a total of 32 disciplines are once again in with a chance of winning a Diamond Trophy. What’s new is that ten stars can count on an extra prize pool of 500,000 dollars.

As was the case in previous years, the Wanda Diamond League has set aside a generous prize pool. The prize money will be divided equally over all disciplines and the same amount will be awarded to men and women. Each meeting programme will include 14 Diamond disciplines and 25,000 dollars can be won per Diamond League discipline. The winner in every discipline (of the final in Zürich) wins the Diamond Trophy and 30,000 dollars. The other finalists in a discipline get another 30,000 dollars to divide amongst themselves.

In addition to the equal prize money for men and women, the Wanda Diamond League offers yet another innovation. Athletes who performed exceptionally well throughout the season will get an extra reward. There will be ten of those athletes, divided over sprint, hurdles, long distance, jumping and throwing events. The ten ‘Best Performing Athletes’ will be able to divide a bonus of 500,000 dollars.

A total of 7 million dollars in prize money will be set aside in the coming season of the Wanda Diamond League. Moreover, there is good news for the fans of triple jump, discus throw, 200 m, 3,000 m steeplechase and 5,000 m. Those disciplines were originally cancelled for 2020, but will be reinstated and make their return in 2021.

The precise distribution of disciplines over the 13 meetings will be unveiled later this month and that is also when we will know the programme for the Memorial on 3rd September 2021.
